Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has removed Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia as the Joint Staff's director for strategy, plans and policy, known as J-5 and regarded as the Pentagon's top military planning job, according to multiple reports. Sylvia has since retired.
The removal, which took place earlier this week, comes as President Donald Trump weighs resuming major military operations against Iran amid a stalemate in the war.
No official reason given
The Pentagon has not publicly explained the decision. One source told ABC News that Sylvia was removed over a lack of confidence, while another said it was unclear whether the order came from Hegseth or Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
A Joint Staff spokesperson thanked Sylvia for his 32 years of distinguished service and wished him well in his next chapter. A defense official said there is no immediate replacement.

Second J-5 director ousted under Hegseth
Sylvia is the second officer in the J-5 post to be pushed out under Hegseth. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire last October. Nearly two dozen generals, admirals and other senior military leaders have been fired, forced out or otherwise departed under Hegseth, with few of the moves explained publicly.
The shake-up comes as the U.S. builds up forces in the Middle East, including an additional Patriot air defense system for Israel and another aircraft carrier strike group due in the region next month, according to The Wall Street Journal.
