Iran’s Foreign Ministry reacted against Ottawa, accusing Canada of joining the US-led war on Iran.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei raised Washington’s economic pressure on Canada in a statement on X. Baghaei said the United States had at times described Canada as its 51st state, imposed tariffs on Canadian products and threatened the country over smoke from wildfires.
Baghaei alleged that, despite all this, Canada had joined the US-led war on Iran to please Washington. In his statement, the spokesperson said, “This is not a hockey night in Canada; it is Washington’s farm team.”

Ottawa’s position
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in March that Canada was ready to help efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Ottawa’s position was interpreted as a sign that Canada could support broader US-led objectives in the region.
Canadian officials, however, said that Canada had not taken part in attack operations against Iran, had not been consulted about the operations and had no intention of becoming involved in the conflict.
Analysts say the close integration of the Canadian Armed Forces with US military command structures continues to fuel debate over Ottawa’s role in the region.
