In the Washington, D.C. mayoral primary, Janeese Lewis George gained an advantage after her rival Kenyan McDuffie conceded the race. Although the official results have not been formally announced by election authorities or the Associated Press, McDuffie’s withdrawal cleared the way for Lewis George to win the election.
Lewis George, a member of the Washington City Council representing Ward 4, rose to prominence with the support of the city’s left-leaning voter base. Other candidates Rini Sampath, Gary Goodweather, Ernest Johnson, Hope Solomon, and Vincent Orange received very low vote shares.
Potential Tensions with Trump
Lewis George’s rise has brought renewed attention to security and governance debates in the capital. It is recalled that during his second term, President Donald Trump focused on maintaining order in Washington, kept National Guard troops stationed in the city, and repeatedly threatened to revoke the District of Columbia’s autonomous governance.
Lewis George openly opposed Trump’s deployment of the National Guard during her campaign. In previous statements, she argued that the federal government used curfews as a weapon, which she said amounted to a direct attack on the hundreds of thousands of residents living in the city.
Opposing the administration’s tough stance on crime, Lewis George criticized curfews targeting young people as the wrong approach. She believes the military presence and ICE agents wearing masks pose a real risk to the youth.
Campaign Focused on Social Policies
Lewis George advocates for broader access to childcare services in the city. Her plan aims to ensure families do not pay more than 7% of their income for childcare.
Identifying as a democratic socialist, she also supports movements calling for police budget cuts. She has received backing from progressive groups such as Black Lives Matter, the Working Families Party, and the Metro D.C. chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Lewis George is widely seen as the likely winner in the November general election. If this outcome materializes, Washington’s leadership may enter a period of more intense political confrontation following Muriel Bowser’s tenure.
