Johnson & Johnson has proposed a $5.5 billion settlement for thousands of lawsuits alleging its talc-based products cause ovarian cancer. With this offer, the company aims to end a legal process that has been ongoing for about 15 years.
The proposed settlement covers approximately 76,000 ovarian cancer claims. According to a statement from Johnson & Johnson, for the settlement to take effect, plaintiffs representing at least 95 percent of the remaining claims must participate in the process.
This development comes after the court ruled in favor of the company and the plaintiffs' side acknowledged that they could not prove Johnson & Johnson's talc products caused ovarian cancer in any plaintiff.

Under the settlement, Johnson & Johnson commits to paying a total of $5.5 billion. The first payment is planned to be up to $3 billion in 2027, with no additional payments before 2028.
The company had stopped the worldwide sale of its talc-based "Johnson's Baby" powder in 2023. Johnson & Johnson maintains that its research shows talc is safe, does not contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer.
