In Texas, jury selection has been completed in the murder case against Karmelo Anthony, and opening statements are expected to begin on Thursday. The selected 12-member jury does not include any Black members.
Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing incident at a high school cross-country race in Frisco in April 2025, which resulted in the death of white student Austin Metcalf. Both individuals were reported to be 17 years old at the time. Anthony claims he acted in self-defense.
High Interest in the Courtroom
Judge John Roach Jr. personally oversaw the jury selection process in the early days of the week. Lawyers tried to identify individuals who could impartially evaluate the widely publicized case that sparked intense debates on social media.
The 12-member jury was formed with the selection completed on Tuesday. It was reported that the prosecution told the jury that they had never had to bring up the issue of race in such a discussion before.
Courtroom Appearance and Security Measures
Anthony reportedly appeared in court on Wednesday wearing a suit and tie with a purple shirt. The color purple is said to be frequently worn by supporters attending the hearings. Anthony’s hair was shorter than in previous appearances, and he remained calm throughout the trial.
Previously, it was shared that three people attempting to take photos or videos were removed from the courtroom. Filming inside the courthouse is prohibited due to current procedural rules.
Defense and Prosecution Positions
Anthony’s lawyer Mike Howard argues that all details of the incident should be heard in court before reaching a conclusion. Howard stated that the prosecution cannot surpass reasonable doubt and that Anthony may have acted under self-defense.
Under Texas law, self-defense is considered a defense where the defendant admits the act but claims it was legally justified under the circumstances. This defense is expected to be central in the case.
It was also reported that before the trial, the judge imposed a gag order limiting public statements by lawyers directly connected to the defense and prosecution.
Case Description in the File
According to the file, the incident occurred on April 2, 2025, inside the Memorial High School team tent at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco during a rain delay. Investigation records suggest Anthony told Metcalf, "Touch me and see what happens," before pulling a knife from his bag.
Witnesses told police that Anthony stabbed Metcalf in the chest during this encounter. Metcalf later died from his injuries.
Police records indicate Anthony told officers at the scene that he was defending himself. After being taken into custody, he reportedly spontaneously said, "I am not the defendant, I did it."
Wide Impact and Trial Schedule
The incident quickly sparked nationwide debate. Social media comments, public demonstrations, and opposing campaigns made the case even more visible.
About 35 witnesses are expected to be heard during the trial. The case may last up to two weeks.
If found guilty, Anthony could face a sentence ranging from five years to life imprisonment under Texas law.
