Kimi Antonelli will not start the Austrian Grand Prix with a grid penalty despite receiving a five-second time penalty after the Barcelona Grand Prix. The reason is not that he left the race without points but that he was officially classified at the end of the race.
Antonelli was penalized for exceeding track limits four times during the race. Race stewards reviewed video evidence to assess these violations.
The penalty given after the violations was applied to the race result and did not convert into a starting grid penalty for the next race. Antonelli retired on lap 61 but was classified officially because he completed more than 90% of the 66-lap race distance.
As a result, Antonelli was placed 16th in the final standings. The five-second penalty was not enforced as a grid drop for the Austrian Grand Prix.
Before the race, there were also discussions about Antonelli’s championship chances. Jacques Villeneuve noted that some critical moments this season have gone in Antonelli’s favor.
Villeneuve cited the first chicane incident in Miami as an example, indicating that certain events have benefited the young driver. This assessment also referred to Antonelli’s position in the season’s points standings.
Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship with 156 points. Lewis Hamilton has 115 points, while George Russell is nine points behind the leader.
