Lebanon's Justice Minister Adel Nassar rejected US President Donald Trump's proposal that Israel delegate the fight against Hezbollah to Syria. Nassar emphasized that disarming Hezbollah is an internal matter for Lebanon.
Nassar stated that they oppose handing over this responsibility to foreign powers. He noted that Lebanon has long suffered from foreign interventions and stressed that decision-making authority over the country's security issues must belong to the state.
Trump's Remarks at the G7 Summit
During the G7 Summit held in France, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Israel's approach toward Lebanon and Hezbollah. He argued that Israel needs to "finish the job faster."
Trump also mentioned his suggestion that Israel assign the Hezbollah issue to Syria. He said the person governing Syria is supported by himself, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and some others, and that this person has done an "extraordinary" job in reorganizing the country.
Trump argued that completely demolishing a civilian apartment building was not right, noting that many civilians live in those buildings. He also criticized Israel's attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut on June 14.
Three Killed in Beirut Attack
On June 14, 2026, the Israeli military carried out an airstrike targeting a residential apartment in the southern suburbs of Beirut. The attack was claimed to be aimed at Hezbollah targets.
Three people were killed in the attack, including two women, and 16 others were injured, among them four women.
Trump said he did not approve of the attack occurring shortly before the announcement of an agreement between the US and Iran. He stated that he communicated this clearly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Agreement Between Washington and Tehran
Washington and Tehran announced on Sunday evening that they had reached an agreement brokered by Pakistan. The agreement reportedly includes ending military operations on various fronts, including Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the naval blockade on Iran.
The agreement is expected to be signed in Switzerland on Friday. This development has reignited the debate on the Lebanon front.
Casualty Toll on the Lebanon Front
Israel has continued its large-scale attacks on Lebanon since March 2. According to Lebanon's Ministry of Health, these attacks have resulted in 3,884 deaths, 11,856 injuries, and over one million people displaced.
It is noted that Israel continues to occupy some areas in southern Lebanon, some of which have been occupied for decades, while others expanded again after the 2023-2024 war. With the recent attacks, Israeli forces' advance into Lebanese territory has exceeded 10 kilometers.
