U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he currently has no plans to run in the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking to Colombian media, Rubio said he did not know what the future would bring but was not considering running at this stage. Rubio said he was not seeking any office and was fully focused on the responsibilities of his current position.
It was also alleged that Rubio had expressed the same position in at least one private meeting in recent months. It was further stated that Rubio was satisfied with his role as secretary of state and that U.S. President Donald Trump had given him broad authority.
Claims emerged that Trump wanted Vice President J. D. Vance to win the 2028 presidential election. Some sources close to Trump, however, alleged that he had not yet made a definitive choice between Vance and Rubio.
Trump had previously announced that he would run again in a future presidential election. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution bars a person from being elected president more than twice.
