A mother of five was killed in a shooting at a gas station in Missouri where she had gone to buy drinks for her children. The Ferguson Police Department said 35-year-old Shakeela Martin arrived at the BP station on South Florissant and Woodstock roads Tuesday night with two of her young children.
On a hot night, Martin, who wanted to buy fruit drinks for her children, was shot after a dispute that started inside the store spilled into the parking lot and turned into a gunfight. Police stated that Martin was an innocent bystander with no connection to the incident and was struck by bullets as she was returning to her vehicle.
Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle said, "She came here to buy drinks for her little children. The children were not physically harmed but were deeply affected emotionally. You can imagine what it's like for a child to watch their mother being killed before their eyes."
In the incident, an adult male was also seriously injured and taken to the hospital. It is not yet clear whether this person was a party to the dispute or a target. The identity of the attacker remains unknown, and police are continuing the investigation.
Martin's family said she had gone to the station with her children to celebrate the happy news the day after she planned to move into a new home. A GoFundMe campaign emphasized that Martin was "a devoted mother who was the center of the world for her five beautiful children." With no life insurance, donations are being collected for Martin's funeral expenses and her children's needs.
The Ferguson Police Department asked anyone with information about the incident to contact authorities at 314-522-3100 or the CrimeStoppers line at 866-371-TIPS.
