A car parade in a shopping mall parking lot in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, turned into a hate crime. A group attacked a Muslim woman and her 7-year-old child during the parade.
The attackers hurled racist insults such as 'Go back to your country' at the family before beating the woman in front of her young son. The woman's husband, who returned to the scene, found her with a swollen face and a bleeding nose.
After the attack was reported to authorities, the Canadian Muslim community called for the incident to be investigated in all its aspects as a hate crime. Elected officials, particularly those in Atlantic Canada, were urged to condemn the rise of Islamophobia in the country and to engage with the community.
