The New York Times claimed that the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) concealed the true casualty and damage figures from recent military clashes with Iran. Citing unnamed US officials, the newspaper reported that the Pentagon's official statements do not reflect the real situation.
These officials alleged that before the attack in Jordan that killed two US soldiers and left one missing, Iran carried out three additional attacks against American forces in that country. According to the claims, many US soldiers were wounded and several American helicopters were damaged in those attacks.
The Pentagon's statements, however, did not mention these attacks or the damage they caused. A military official stated that US Central Command (CENTCOM) is not required to disclose such incidents if wounded soldiers quickly return to duty.

US losses are mounting in the ongoing tensions with Iran. CENTCOM had previously announced that two soldiers were killed and one went missing in an attack by Iran on a US base in Jordan on July 17. The Pentagon stated that the identities of the two fallen soldiers had been determined and that the investigation was ongoing.
Central Command also reported that another US soldier was killed on July 18 in Iraq during the controlled destruction of unexploded ordnance from an Iranian drone. With this incident, the official number of US soldiers killed since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran in February rose to 17.
