Nine schools affiliated with the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) were targeted by emails containing threats against Muslims. Police units in the provinces launched an investigation following the incident.
The messages, signed “Citizen Vigilante,” said Muslims would be killed and that Canada would be “purged” of Islam.
MAC spokesperson Nabil Sultan said the same anonymous email was sent to schools in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec within a 24-hour period. Private security officers were hired at the schools to ensure students’ safety.
Police units investigating the incident are working with hate-crime teams. Ontario police said they were aware of a hate-motivated threat email targeting Islamic institutions and had increased patrols around mosques and schools.
Ottawa police announced that the number of officers had been increased in areas where the threat messages were received. Police said they had so far found no sign of a “concrete or imminent threat.”
Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangari said every child has the right to receive an education in a safe environment. Anandasangari said families should feel safe sending their children to school and described the threats as unacceptable.
Data from Statistics Canada show that anti-Muslim hate crimes reported to police increased by more than 170 percent between 2020 and 2024.
