A New York Police Department (NYPD) officer shot the driver of a vehicle reported as stolen in the Bronx on Sunday. The incident occurred after the driver attempted to flee from a police stop and struck multiple officers with the car.
How did the incident unfold?
A silver Kia Sportage, reported stolen from the Bronx, was tracked via license plate recognition systems and spotted by police while traveling on West Fordham Road. Officers attempted to stop the driver and repeatedly ordered the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle.
According to NYPD Bronx North Patrol Borough Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo, the driver put the car in reverse, striking an officer, an unmarked police car, and then multiple NYPD personnel. He then put the car in drive, turned the wheel to the right, and drove toward a sergeant standing there. The vehicle struck the sergeant, throwing him to the ground.
Shooting and injuries
As the driver continued trying to leave the area, an officer on top of a nearby vehicle opened fire, shooting the driver. The wounded driver was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital and reported to be in stable condition. The police officers involved in the incident were also taken to local hospitals in stable condition.
Suspect's background
Police stated that the suspect driving the stolen vehicle had been arrested in February on charges of shooting another man. The suspect had been charged with multiple felonies, including attempted assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Charges against the driver of the stolen vehicle are pending. The incident was captured on the body-worn cameras of the officers involved, and the investigation is ongoing.
