Former US President Barack Obama, speaking at the ceremony for the opening of his presidential center in Chicago, said that America has "fallen far short" of the promise of the Declaration of Independence by the founding fathers. Obama described the country's story as the effort of different generations coming together to form a more perfect union.
Obama emphasized that the nation's founding was never a self-achieving success. In his speech, he recalled that slavery persisted and that some states only allowed property-owning white men to vote.
Nevertheless, Obama stated that the Constitution and the Bill of Rights provide a framework that allows subsequent generations to improve the country. According to him, America's strength comes from each generation making this framework more inclusive.
Center opens to the public on Friday
The Obama Presidential Center will officially open its doors to the public on Friday. The opening ceremony was attended by a broad guest list ranging from former prime ministers to politicians, business leaders, and prominent figures from the art world.
Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Oprah Winfrey, Nancy Pelosi, Kamala Harris, Steven Spielberg, Hillary Clinton, and former US Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Joe Biden were also present at the ceremony.
The center features exhibitions that combine the former president's tenure and America's founding story. A replica of the Oval Office is among the museum's notable sections.
Focuses on America's founding and civic history
The museum also displays a copy of the Declaration of Independence, a replica of Frederick Douglass's inkwell, Lincoln's Bible, and a brochure belonging to journalist and civil rights advocate Ida B. Wells. Obama said these objects start the center's narrative from the nation's founding.
In his speech, the former president also conveyed the message that leaders from different political views can unite around common values. Recalling John McCain and Mitt Romney, he argued that every president in their own time has tried to uphold similar core values.
According to Obama, America's most powerful story is based on the idea that citizens can understand each other and come together around a common purpose. He said he hopes visitors leave the center with that feeling.
Years-long project opens amid controversy
The center's opening took place after more than a decade of planning and construction. The project has been closely watched due to rising costs, construction delays, and debates over public infrastructure spending.
It was reported that taxpayers spent hundreds of millions of dollars on roads, transportation links, and infrastructure upgrades around the campus. The total construction cost was reported as $830 million in 2021, and it was stated that this figure may have since exceeded $1 billion.
A recent review also revealed that multiple construction companies suffered losses ranging from hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of dollars. All these issues have kept the cost debates surrounding the center's opening alive.
