Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi called on the parties to reach a lasting political accord, saying the dispute between Iran and the United States threatens regional security. In his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Albusaidi announced that passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be protected.
The Omani minister said the conflict that began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran earlier this year had disrupted maritime shipping and trade along the strategic waterway. Albusaidi noted that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz affects energy security, prices and confidence in the international system.
Albusaidi said his country was committed to protecting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Calling for respect for the interests of countries that need to transit the strait, the minister urged all parties to cooperate with Muscat to ensure safe passage.
The Omani foreign minister called on Tehran and Washington to resolve their ongoing disputes and develop political understandings that could provide a lasting way out of the crisis. He said Oman stood in solidarity with steps aimed at protecting the security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighboring countries.
Addressing the situation in Yemen, Albusaidi said the parties should work toward a political solution that preserves the country’s unity, stability and territorial integrity. He said such an agreement should safeguard Yemen’s sovereignty and its relations with neighboring countries.
