Drug trafficking and gang clashes in Brussels
Brussels, home to the institutions of the European Union, has faced security problems in recent years linked to drug trafficking and clashes between gangs.
The Port of Antwerp is considered one of the main entry points for cocaine shipments sent from Latin America to Europe. Authorities say a significant portion of the drugs entering the country is put on the market through distribution networks in Brussels and the surrounding area.
Belgian police recorded 96 shootings in Brussels in 2025, most of them linked to drug trafficking. Eight people were killed in these incidents.
