Spain’s Foreign Ministry reacted to U.S. sanctions targeting the president of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and a senior lawyer serving in the prosecutor’s office.
In a written statement, the ministry described the sanctions as an “open attack” on the ICC’s independence, integrity and impartiality. The statement said the court’s authority derives from the mandate granted by states parties to the Rome Statute.
Spain expresses solidarity with ICC personnel
Spain’s Foreign Ministry said the ICC plays an indispensable role in ensuring accountability for the most serious crimes, protecting victims and helping provide redress for the harm they have suffered.
The ministry said Spain stood in full solidarity with the ICC’s judges, prosecutors and all personnel affected by the sanctions.
The statement also said Spain would continue to fully uphold its commitments under the Rome Statute and international law and support the exercise of the ICC’s jurisdiction.
