Several French cities have imposed overnight curfews after a weekend of riots, looting and clashes that grew out of weeks of student demonstrations over rising living costs and the state of public services.

Paris police set a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. around Place de la République and Les Halles and banned protests in certain areas from 8 p.m. Parts of Lyon are also under a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Nice Mayor Eric Ciotti signed an order imposing an overnight curfew for minors in the city center. In the north, Lille, Douai, Wattignies and Denain introduced a two-day curfew for minors from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., and Marseille banned gatherings and demonstrations.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu ruled out a blanket curfew in Paris for now, favoring partial and localized measures. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offered to resign, but President Emmanuel Macron rejected the offer. The Interior Ministry said about 2,400 people were arrested over the weekend and nearly 1,000 officers were injured. Unions have called for another round of strikes and rallies on Nov. 5.
