In the U.S. congressional midterm elections, voters will cast ballots on November 3 for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 of the Senate’s 100 seats. The Senate race includes 20 Republican and 13 Democratic candidates.
Nationwide polling averages show Republicans with an advantage in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. However, the outcome is expected to be determined by districts where the gap between the two parties has narrowed.
Close Senate races could prove decisive
The Real Clear Politics table shows that the election of 45 Democratic and 47 Republican senators appears close to certain. In eight states, however, the races between the candidates remain close.
If Republicans maintain their lead in three of these eight states, they could secure a majority in the Senate even if the seat distribution ends up at 50-50. In such a scenario, Vice President JD Vance’s tie-breaking vote could determine the majority.
Under the law, the Vice President, who also serves as president of the Senate, may cast the deciding vote in favor of his own party when the vote is tied.
Thirty-nine House seats remain competitive
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election, and a party needs 218 seats to secure a majority. Current projections indicate that Republicans are close to securing 201 seats, while Democrats are close to securing 195.
The narrowing gap in the 39 seats where competition between the two parties continues keeps the race for control of the House open. Of these seats, 22 are in districts that lean Democratic and 17 are in districts that lean Republican.
If these trends are reflected in the election results, Democrats could secure a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
Current seat distribution in Congress
Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, while Democrats hold 45. The two independent senators also vote with Democrats on many issues.
In the House of Representatives, Republicans hold 218 seats, Democrats hold 214 and independents hold one. Two seats in the House are currently vacant.
