Putin’s representative Kirill Dmitriev is continuing talks in the United States on possible economic cooperation between Moscow and Washington. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the talks were ongoing.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Peskov said Dmitriev’s meetings with US negotiators focused on possible economic cooperation between the two countries. Peskov said there is currently no economic cooperation between Russia and the United States, but there is an understanding that such a partnership could be mutually beneficial.
The Kremlin spokesman said the possibilities for the future were being assessed in this context.
Whom did Dmitriev meet in New York?
Dmitriev met with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, in New York. The meetings addressed the possibility of economic cooperation as well as peace efforts related to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Dmitriev was in New York during the week of the United Nations General Assembly and was seen outside a hotel in Manhattan.
Peskov assesses US-China talks and sanctions
Peskov described the latest contacts between the United States and China as “an engagement of critical importance” for Moscow and said Russia was closely monitoring the talks.
Commenting on the new sanctions legislation signed into law by US President Donald Trump last week, Peskov said it was not yet known when or how the possible measures dubbed “hell sanctions” would be imposed, or whether they would be imposed at all.
The legislation allows existing sanctions against Russia to be expanded. It also permits primary and secondary sanctions, as well as tariffs and bans, against Russian officials, oligarchs, family members, foreign individuals, banks and other financial institutions identified as supporting the war in Ukraine.
The law also provides for the expansion of existing sanctions against Iran.
Moscow reacts to EU media sanctions
Peskov also criticized the European Union’s decision to impose sanctions on Ksenia Fedorova, the former head of the French branch of Russia-based broadcaster RT.
Peskov called the decision “open pressure” on the media and “harassment” of media representatives, expressing Moscow’s opposition to the EU’s measure.
