Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced after a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday that they had agreed to meet in New York during the United Nations General Assembly meetings.

Zelenskyy said the planned meeting could bring significant changes to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine.
Security and de-escalation issues
Thanking Trump for the recent visit to Kyiv by his U.S. special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, Zelenskyy said the talks addressed concrete issues. He said the U.S. representatives had seen the situation in Ukraine firsthand.
Zelenskyy said they shared views on steps to reduce tensions and key security issues. He listed energy, food and the protection of people's lives among those issues.

New sanctions against Russia
The Ukrainian president also thanked Trump for signing legislation approving new sanctions against Russia, which had been supported by the late U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.
