Long Beach closed all of its coastal swimming areas after about 29,000 gallons of sewage spilled near Livingston Drive and Second Street at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to the city's Utilities Department.
All six miles of open coastal beaches, bay swimming areas and lagoons in the city were closed and remained so on Sunday. Crews recovered about 15,000 gallons of the sewage, while the remaining 14,000 gallons were discharged into the ocean.

City officials said the spill was not related to the weekend rainstorm. Work was underway to repair the damaged pipe and clean up the area.
Swimmers and surfers are advised to stay out of the water until the closures are lifted.
