House Speaker Mike Johnson said Iran is closely following the U.S. midterm election campaign and is trying to undermine President Donald Trump, in an interview with CBS News’ Robert Costa ahead of the Nov. 3 vote.
Johnson said he believed the Iranians were watching the election process closely and wanted to damage the president’s political future, calling that a significant factor. After the election, he said, the country would move into “a very different phase.”
Johnson did not elaborate on what the “different phase” would involve.

War and the midterms
The conflict with Iran has become a major issue in the campaign. In a September interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Johnson said he prayed that Trump’s prediction that the fighting would end after the midterms would prove right, while acknowledging the war was pushing up prices at home.
In the CBS interview, Johnson also discussed Republicans’ chances of keeping their House majority and his own future plans.
