A 17-year-old student died on Wednesday, September 30, after going over a fourth-floor balcony railing at Benjamin Franklin High School in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The student, senior Xavier Nungarary, fell at around 1 p.m. during the school day. Firefighters took him to a hospital, where he died.

Videos circulating online show him being verbally confronted by another student in a classroom. A teacher tried to intervene before he was punched. He then ran out along the outdoor walkway and went over the railing.
Some posts online claimed he was being chased at the moment of the fall, but police said preliminary evidence indicates he was not being actively chased, threatened or followed when he went over the railing. The Los Angeles Police Department said there was "no evidence of foul play" and that it was aware of the videos. Investigators are reviewing the footage and student statements, and are examining whether head trauma from the fight may have left him disoriented. No arrests have been announced.

Classmates described him as "a really nice kid. Very quiet." A memorial of flowers and candles was set up outside the school and a vigil was planned. The Los Angeles Unified School District made counselors available on campus.
