Susan Collins concedes Maine Senate race, ending 30-year career
Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine conceded to Democrat Troy Jackson early Wednesday, ending a Senate career of nearly 30 years and handing Democrats another pickup on a night that gave them control of Congress.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins conceded the Maine Senate race to Democrat Troy Jackson early Wednesday, ending a Senate career that began in 1997. Jackson, a former president of the Maine State Senate, declared victory after Collins called him to congratulate him.
"It has been the honor of my life to serve the people of Maine in the United States Senate," Collins said in a statement. She said she and her staff would "work to ensure a smooth transition."
Collins was seeking a sixth term, which would have made her the longest-serving senator in Maine history. The only Republican senator from New England, she was widely seen as one of the most moderate members of her party and was often a pivotal vote in a closely divided Senate. Earlier in the night, she had warned supporters that results "are going to take a while."
Her defeat capped a sweeping night for Democrats, who flipped Republican-held Senate seats in Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, South Carolina and North Carolina, securing a majority in the chamber, and also won control of the House.
