An unexpected development occurred in a nearly 40-year-old unsolved murder case in the U.S. state of Florida. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 70-year-old Gary Edward Glowacz in connection with the 1987 murder of 20-year-old Melissa Ellison. The suspect had gone to police claiming to have information about the murder, but an investigation led to an arrest warrant being issued for him.
Glowacz contacted the sheriff's office on Wednesday, stating he wanted to provide information about Ellison's death. After detectives interviewed the suspect, an arrest warrant was issued. Gary Edward Glowacz was booked into the Duval County Jail on charges of murder, battery, and theft.
Death on December 28, 1987
The incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. on December 28, 1987, at a home on Colejean Road in Jacksonville. Police responded to a call and found Melissa Ellison dead in her bed. According to official statements, injuries consistent with blunt force trauma were found on Ellison's body.
Ellison's roommates said they went to check on the young woman after hearing her small child crying on the living room couch.
Statement from Sheriff Waters
Jacksonville Sheriff T. K. Waters commented on the murder, which had been classified as a cold case, during a press conference. Waters said, 'Television shows condition us to believe that murders not solved within the first 48 hours will never be solved. That is completely false.'
"While his arrest cannot fill the great void in the hearts of Melissa Ellison's loved ones, I hope this arrest will be another step in the healing process."
The sheriff's office thanked First Coast Crime Stoppers, the State Attorney's Office, Project Cold Case, and the Clay County Sheriff's Office for their contributions to the investigation. The arrest, coming nearly 40 years later, drew widespread attention in the area.
