Chinese President Xi was received by Donald Trump during his U.S. visit, which began after an 11-year gap. U.S. President Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.
In a written statement issued after arriving in the United States, Xi said China and the United States should act on the basis of partnership rather than rivalry. Xi said the great rejuvenation of the Chinese people and the vision of making America great again could advance together, adding that the two goals could complement each other and benefit the world.
The Chinese president said cooperation formed the basis of relations between the two countries and noted that they wanted to strengthen relations marked by constructive and strategic stability.
Tariffs and export controls on the agenda
Xi's bilateral meeting with Trump is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Türkiye time. The leaders are expected to discuss trade disputes, particularly tariffs, technology restrictions and measures concerning exports of rare earth elements.
The talks are expected to focus on maintaining the temporary understandings previously reached on economic and trade disputes and preserving stability in bilateral relations.
China and the United States had previously taken steps to postpone reciprocal tariffs, ease export controls on rare earth elements and defer some trade restrictions. During Trump's visit to China in May, the two sides also reached agreements on establishing trade and investment councils, discussing tariff reductions on certain products and China's purchase of passenger aircraft from the United States.
Iran and artificial intelligence safety also to be discussed
Iran and the war in the Middle East are also expected to be discussed at the summit. The possibility that the conflicts could disrupt energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is raising concerns about global energy security. The United States' expansion of sanctions on Russia and Iran is also among the issues that could affect the economic dimension of the talks.
On artificial intelligence safety, the two countries are expected to launch a dialogue covering information sharing on potential risks and an early-warning mechanism for possible threats. While the United States is focused on containing risks, China advocates establishing more comprehensive global governance for artificial intelligence.
U.S. artificial intelligence developer companies are asking the Washington administration to take measures over allegations that Chinese companies have obtained data from their models using a method known as "distillation."
