A new sanctions plan targeting the International Criminal Court (ICC) is on the agenda of the Donald Trump administration. Documents cited by U.S. officials indicate that the measures are expected to restrict the court’s access to the global financial system.
Dollar transactions could be restricted
Under the plan, most transactions with the ICC are expected to be banned after a transition period lasting six to seven months. The sanctions could also prevent the court from conducting transactions in dollars.

Such restrictions could cause the ICC to lose access to a significant part of the global financial system and seriously hinder its work.
It remains unclear when the sanctions will receive final approval. Some U.S. officials said the decision could be made during this week’s United Nations General Assembly or in the following days.
Trump had previously criticized the ICC
Trump had previously voiced criticism of the ICC. The court had issued arrest warrants for several Israeli officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, over allegations of genocide in Gaza.
Trump had also called on his allies to withdraw from the ICC.
