Donald Trump delayed a decision on Saudi Arabia’s request for U.S. airstrike support against the Houthis in Yemen.
U.S. officials said Trump told his advisers, one day before his phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, that he was not inclined to launch an attack on the Houthis. According to the same officials, Trump changed his position after speaking with the crown prince.
During this period, Trump allegedly instructed the U.S. Department of Defense to prepare for airstrikes against the Houthis. However, a decision was made on Sunday not to launch an attack at this stage.

Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia
The Houthis have recently targeted Saudi-owned vessels in maritime routes in the region, as well as several locations inside the country.
The attacks have also included actions targeting airports and energy production facilities, causing civilian deaths and material damage.
Background to the conflict in Yemen
Saudi Arabia has led a coalition supporting Yemen’s government since March 2015. The Houthis, who are accused of receiving support from Iran, have controlled the capital, Sanaa, and parts of Yemen since September 2014.
