U.S. President Donald Trump spent hours talking to Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot Grok during a clandestine meeting with Musk in the Oval Office in December 2025, including asking how Venezuelans would respond to the capture of their president, Nicolás Maduro, Time magazine reported.

According to the report, Grok told Trump that Maduro was a "deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall."
About a month later, on January 3, 2026, U.S. forces seized Maduro in Venezuela and flew him to the United States. When celebrations did break out, Trump "came away thinking Grok was ingenious," a source told Time.

The meeting took place roughly seven months after Musk left his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Time wrote that since returning to office Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities and is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him.

Grok is developed by Musk’s company xAI. The White House has not publicly commented on the report.
