US President Donald Trump criticized UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's departure from office. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump described Starmer as a "good man" but said he failed to manage energy policies by not utilizing the North Sea's oil and gas resources.
Trump noted that the UK imports energy from Norway, but the North Sea has greater resources. He attributed London's failure to use these resources to environmental concerns.
Lack of cooperation on NATO and Iran
The US President also stated that Starmer did not cooperate sufficiently with the US on issues related to NATO and Iran. Trump said Starmer initially hesitated over the use of the UK's Akrotiri base in Cyprus for a US-Israel operation against Iran, and that this stance harmed Starmer.
Trump said, "He had two problems: energy and immigration. These issues harmed him greatly."
Starmer's departure and the future
Hours after Starmer's departure from office, Trump expressed his best wishes to Starmer, describing him as "a friend to some extent."
Keir Starmer announced his decision to step down as Labour Party leader yesterday. The decision came after the party's local and regional election results and internal pressures.
Starmer is expected to be replaced by senior Labour Party politician and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham. This could lead to the UK seeing its seventh prime minister in a decade.
Earlier, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that Starmer would leave the premiership and that he had experienced a "major failure" on immigration and energy issues.
