U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked a new debate in American politics by proposing an unexpected name for a vacant Senate seat in South Carolina. Trump called for the temporary appointment of Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, to replace him.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, "I have recommended to Governor Henry McMaster that Lindsey Graham's wonderful sister, Darline, serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina." He said the appointment would be a "magnificent tribute" to the late senator.
The bond between Graham and his sister Darline was quite special. After their parents passed away, Graham legally adopted his sister and raised her.
Governor's Decision Awaited
It is eagerly awaited how South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster will respond to this suggestion. The governor is scheduled to announce the appointment decision on Monday at 4:00 p.m. local time. McMaster has so far given no hint as to whom he will choose.
Republican Senator Tim Scott also expressed support for Nordone's candidacy. In a post on X, Scott said, "Darline Graham Nordone, Lindsey Graham's sister, would be a great choice to complete the remainder of the Senate term."
Scott had previously mentioned former Representative Trey Gowdy and former Senator Jim DeMint among possible interim candidates. He said he hoped McMaster would "appoint a placeholder and let the voters decide."
Special Election Process Begins
In South Carolina, the special election process for Graham's seat will begin on August 11. Potential candidates from the Republican Party have already started to mobilize.
House members Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman are said to be considering running in the special election. Representative Joe Wilson, however, announced he will remain in the House. The state's other Republican congress members have not yet declared their intentions.
