Hungary’s decision to expel 10 Russian diplomats prompted Moscow to announce retaliation. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that a response would be issued.
In comments to TASS, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the response to the “anti-Russian lobby” in Budapest would be harsh and painful.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán said the expulsion decision was taken over activities deemed incompatible with the diplomats’ diplomatic status. Orbán said the move aimed to protect her country’s security and sovereignty.
Orbán stressed that sending the 10 diplomats home did not mean diplomatic relations with Moscow had ended. She said Hungary would continue its dialogue with Russia.
Budapest’s decision came after a Russian diplomat was expelled in May over allegations that he had conducted intelligence-gathering activities. That same month, Orbán summoned Russia’s ambassador to Budapest, Yevgeniy Stanislavov, following Russian drone attacks on Zakarpattia, a region in western Ukraine that is home to a sizeable Hungarian community.
