President Donald Trump on Saturday renewed his promise to send $5,000 to every adult American if Republicans keep control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.
"If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 Midterm Elections, I'm going to give all Adult Citizens in the United States of America, $5,000. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to signing those checks!" Trump wrote on Truth Social, alongside a video message.
"Republicans can do it, Democrats can't"

In the video, Trump tied the payment to tariff revenue. "Republicans can do it, and Democrats can't, because we're taking in massive amounts of money through tariffs and record-setting economic success," he said, adding that if Republicans win, "you will each have $5,000 in your pocket."
Trump first unveiled the so-called "Trump Dividend" at the Republican National Midterm Convention in September and repeated it in the Oval Office on September 28, saying tariffs were bringing in "hundreds of billions of dollars."

A trillion-dollar price tag
The payments would cost the federal government more than $1 trillion, not counting administrative expenses, and would require approval from Congress. Trump has not explained how the plan would be financed beyond tariff revenue. Earlier, his administration had also floated $2,000 "tariff dividend" checks.
Democrats dismissed the pledge. "The only people reaping the benefits of Trump's economy are himself, his family, and his ultra-rich elite donors," Democratic National Committee Deputy Communications Director Kendall Witmer said.
