U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, though experts and analysts say he is not a frontrunner for the award, which will be announced on Oct. 9.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not publicly confirm the names of nominees, and nomination records remain sealed for 50 years, so it is not known who submitted Trump’s name this year.
The Machado medal
Last year the prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her “struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” In January 2026, she presented her medal to Trump at the White House in recognition of his commitment to her country’s freedom. The committee said the award was not transferable, while Trump called the gift “a wonderful gesture of mutual respect.”
Haakon Gjerløw, acting director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, said the committee would be mindful this year of choosing someone who can withstand pressure from Trump. “I think the committee will consider whether the award does more harm than good,” he said. Trump said in February 2025: “They will never give me a Nobel Peace Prize. It’s too bad. I deserve it, but they will never give it to me.”
