U.S. President Donald Trump spoke about Iran at a dinner held at the White House on Wednesday evening. Trump said the United States had attacked Iran and imposed economic sanctions, adding that these steps were intended to help Israel, the Middle East and U.S. security.
Trump claimed that the attacks and sanctions had caused Iran’s economy to completely collapse. He argued that approximately 99 percent of U.S. policies were intended to help the Middle East and said that Iran would attack cities in the Middle East, Europe and the United States after Israel was eliminated.
Trump claims U.S. controls the Strait of Hormuz
Trump also claimed that the United States controlled the Strait of Hormuz and that oil-carrying ships were currently passing through the route.
Chronology of the Iran conflict
The U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran began on February 28, 2026. The Strait of Hormuz, which is important for oil exports and global supply chains, was closed during the conflict.
Iran carried out attacks on Gulf countries and locations it described as “targets belonging to the United States and Israel.” The parties subsequently reached a ceasefire.
Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18, 2026, to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic. However, disputes over implementation and the security of the waterway later disrupted the agreement.
The conflict resumed in July. The U.S. Central Command also announced on Tuesday that it had resumed attacks on targets inside Iran.
