U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to strike a bridge or power plant in retaliation for any ship attack by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement on his Truth Social account, Trump said, "Every time the Islamic Republic of Iran fires a missile, rocket, drone, or any other weapon at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. will bomb and destroy A BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those in the capital Tehran."
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are escalating following the collapse of the temporary ceasefire agreement signed last month between the U.S. and Iran. The intensification of attacks between the parties increases the risk of a wider conflict in the region.
Trump's threat to target bridges and power plants drew criticism from international legal circles. Some international law experts and world leaders stressed that threats to attack such civilian targets violate international law.
