Democratic lawmakers in the US Congress introduced a resolution condemning Donald Trump's racist remarks against Indian and Chinese Americans. Among the lawmakers presenting the resolution are Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ted Lieu, and Pramila Jayapal. The resolution criticizes Trump's support on the social media platform Truth Social for a racist post by radio host Michael Savage. The post reportedly used derogatory expressions about India and China, questioned immigrants' loyalty, and spread harmful stereotypes about these communities. On April 22, Trump shared quotes from the radio program The Savage Nation. In this program, Michael Savage said, "A baby born here instantly becomes a citizen, then they bring the whole family from China, India, or some other hell." India described these remarks as "ignorant, inappropriate, and in poor taste." The resolution emphasizes that Trump's increase in such racist rhetoric sends a dangerous message to Indian and Chinese Americans who already face hate and discrimination. Congressman Krishnamoorthi recalled the contributions of Indian and Chinese Americans to American society and stated that Trump should stop demonizing these people. It was also noted that such rhetoric reinforces harmful stereotypes and fuels racist discrimination and violence. Congressman Lieu expressed that Asian Americans have historically been treated as perpetual foreigners and that such racist rhetoric has no place in America. Jayapal accused Trump and his administration of focusing on racism and xenophobia instead of addressing the public's economic difficulties. The resolution was also supported by civil rights organizations such as STOP AAPI Hate, Chinese for Affirmative Action, South Asian Network, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice-AAJC. These organizations emphasized that language degrading all nations and communities feeds prejudice, discrimination, and violence. South Asian Network director Shakeel Syed stated that Trump's racist rhetoric must be stopped, otherwise innocent lives could be endangered. Cynthia Choi, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate, said that Trump's targeting of birthright citizenship puts all Asian Americans at risk and that this is not a matter of national security or policy but racism and xenophobia.
