Dr. Burçin Öğrenir, a Turkish American educator and researcher who lives in Wayne, New Jersey, is running for a seat on the Wayne Board of Education in the Nov. 3 election.
Six candidates are competing for three seats on the board, which oversees the township's public schools. Voters can choose up to three candidates, and the top three vote-getters will serve three-year terms. Öğrenir is listed second on the ballot.

Her campaign slogan is 'Every child matters'
Öğrenir holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in early childhood education and has worked as a university professor, teacher trainer and researcher. She also runs a local education business. Her campaign slogan is "Every child matters."
"I am running for the Wayne Board of Education because I believe every child deserves access to a quality education that supports their academic, social and emotional development," she said in a campaign statement.
Budget transparency and family involvement top her agenda
Her priorities include better education for students, support for teachers, transparent use of the school budget and greater family involvement in school decisions. In a candidate series by local outlet TAPinto Wayne, she backed the district's new Future Ready Schools Advisory Committee as a way to increase community input and said the board should communicate more openly about budget cuts affecting staff and programs.
On enrollment growth, she said she would favor planning for several possible scenarios rather than turning to redistricting by default. Members of the Turkish American community in Wayne have rallied behind her campaign, which supporters see as a step toward greater representation in local government.
