At the high-level meeting of the Group of Friends of the UN Alliance of Civilizations in New York, the potential of cultural diplomacy to prevent conflicts and support lasting peace was highlighted. The meeting was chaired by Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Levent Gümrükçü, TÜRKSOY Secretary-General Sultan Raev, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Yalçın Rafiyev, Kazakh First Deputy Foreign Minister Yerzhan Ashikbayev and Ambassador Vepa Hajiyev, Turkmenistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, addressed the meeting.
Dialogue and cultural diversity as elements of peace
Gümrükçü, a co-sponsor of the UN Alliance of Civilizations, said cultural differences should be seen not as a threat but as a source of strength. He said growing intolerance and polarization had made dialogue among civilizations more important.
Raev said cultural diplomacy was more than a complementary element in international relations and was one of the powerful tools of preventive diplomacy. Noting that wars, forced migration, hate speech and social polarization had left the world facing serious challenges, Raev emphasized that protecting cultural heritage and building mutual trust among societies were important for lasting peace.

The humanitarian tragedy in Palestine and cultural heritage
Raev said wars destroyed not only human lives but also the memory of cities, sacred sites, historic monuments and the civilizational heritage built over generations. He said the humanitarian tragedy in Palestine had once again reminded the world that protecting human life and cultural heritage was a shared responsibility of all humanity.
Raev said the shared cultural heritage of the Turkic world was integrated with the universal values of humanity. He said TÜRKSOY had been working for more than 30 years to protect, preserve and promote the shared cultural heritage of Turkic peoples around the world. Raev added that the organization was ready to share its experience in cultural diplomacy with the UN Alliance of Civilizations.

Youth exchanges and shared heritage projects
Raev said new projects could be developed between TÜRKSOY and the UN Alliance of Civilizations in the areas of youth exchanges, cultural dialogue programs, literary and artistic gatherings, the protection of shared cultural heritage and preventive diplomacy through culture.
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Rafiyev said the 7th World Forum for Intercultural Dialogue, to be held in Baku, would make important contributions to the work of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
Ashikbayev emphasized the need to strengthen interfaith harmony and promote a culture of peaceful coexistence. Hajiyev also highlighted the role of dialogue, mutual respect and adherence to international law in preventing conflicts, saying they were ready to develop cooperation with the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
