U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said those responsible for the attack on The Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levin in the West Bank should serve years in prison. Huckabee described the attack as a “heinous terrorist act.”
Levin was attacked while covering the olive harvest in the Palestinian village of Abu Falah in the West Bank. About 80 masked Israeli settlers allegedly attacked the journalist.
Levin’s equipment was destroyed
The attackers knocked Levin to the ground and kicked her for approximately 10 minutes or longer. Levin said she tried to protect her cameras and bag during the attack.
Her waist bag, which contained her passport and cameras, was forcibly taken, torn open and damaged, destroying the cameras inside. Levin sustained serious injuries, was later assisted by Palestinians and taken to a hospital by ambulance.
Huckabee calls the attack a terrorist act
In a statement published on the social media platform X, Huckabee said the attackers clearly knew that Levin was a U.S. citizen and a member of the press. The ambassador said the attackers should be imprisoned.
“The attack on a woman photojournalist is a despicable terrorist act carried out by cowardly masked individuals. It is a shameful manifestation of senseless violence,” Huckabee said in his statement.
Journalists and olive harvests targeted in West Bank
Levin was covering the olive harvest alongside Palestinians. The attackers were identified as Israeli settlers accused of taking over Palestinian land.
Israeli settlers in the area regularly carry out attacks while Palestinians are harvesting olives and journalists are working, according to accounts from the region.
