The US and Iran have agreed on a temporary deal to restart maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, the lifeline of global oil trade. The official announcement of the 60-day plan agreed upon by the parties is scheduled for tomorrow.
The agreement stipulates the following measures:
- Ships entering the Gulf region will transit through Iranian territorial waters, following the northern route.
- Ships leaving the Gulf for the Sea of Oman will use the southern route, and this transit will take place through Omani territorial waters in coordination with Iran.
- Throughout the 60-day temporary period, no fees or transit taxes will be demanded from ships making transit passage.
- Both sides will cooperate to clear sea mines along the median line of the strait within 30 days through a joint effort.
