Candidates were determined in primaries held in the US states of Michigan, Kansas, Missouri, Virginia and Washington for the November midterm elections. In the Michigan Democratic Senate race, Abdul El-Sayed is leading by a narrow margin.
With 91 percent of the votes counted, El-Sayed is ahead of Representative Haley Stevens. The winner will face Republican Mike Rogers for the seat of retired Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
While Stevens received support from established Democratic figures including Senator Gary Peters, El-Sayed was backed by progressive figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib. US support for Israel and Israel's genocidal campaign against Palestinians in Gaza were among the key issues in the Michigan primary.
