US Attorney General Todd Blanche declined to pledge that the Justice Department would act independently of the White House under all circumstances.
Blanche said such a commitment would be incompatible with the role of attorney general and that no attorney general should make such a pledge.
He rejected claims of pressure from Trump
Blanche dismissed concerns that US President Donald Trump could pressure him to act unethically or illegally. He described those assessments as a “false narrative” created by political opponents and the media.
Blanche said he would remain faithful to the Constitution, adding that the attorneys general who served before him had taken the same oath.

He denied receiving instructions on specific prosecutions
Blanche maintained that Trump had not instructed him on specific prosecutions. He said the notion that Trump called every morning to order a prosecution involving a particular person or issue did not reflect reality.
The attorney general also said he expected members of Trump's inner circle to challenge him. Blanche stated that he would reject any presidential directive that conflicted with his own legal assessment.
Confirmed by a 50-49 Senate vote
Blanche was confirmed in a 50-49 Senate vote earlier this month, replacing Pam Bondi.
