The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that it had launched a new wave of strikes on military targets in Iran. The statement said that Iran's military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense positions, drone storage facilities, and mine-laying capabilities were targeted.
CENTCOM claimed that this attack was carried out in response to the targeting of a commercial oil tanker.
Almost simultaneously with the release of the statement, a reporter for Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, citing a military source close to the matter, reported hearing explosions in the Sirik district of Hormozgan province in southern Iran.
The military source said, "The explosions heard were caused by several shells that hit a telecommunications tower near the village of Tahrouyi in Sirik."
Residents also reported hearing several explosions on Qeshm Island, also in Hormozgan province. The exact location and cause of these explosions have not yet been determined.
Mutual attacks and ceasefire violations
The attacks escalated after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy on Friday fired warning shots at a vessel that ignored warnings to not use an unauthorized route through the Strait of Hormuz. Shortly after this incident, CENTCOM reported launching attacks on military targets in Iran.
In response, the IRGC Navy announced that it had struck American military targets in the region. In a statement, the IRGC said, "And he (the US) has now received the necessary response. The same applies to any future violation. If this attack is repeated, our response will be broader than this."
The ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump on April 7 has been violated multiple times by American forces. These violations occurred during the latest wave of US-Israeli strikes targeting Iran, which were described as unprovoked.
