Momentum is building in the U.S. Senate to lengthen the waiver on the American arms embargo for the Greek Cypriot administration, which currently has to be renewed every year, Washington’s ambassador John Breslow said, with senators discussing “three years, five years.”
Breslow, who took up his post in September, gave his first interview on Sunday to the Cyprus News Agency aboard the destroyer USS Roosevelt, which was visiting the port of Limassol. He spoke of “increased momentum from the Senate” on extending the waiver’s duration.

Roadmap extension before Trump leaves office
The ambassador said the 2024–2029 bilateral defense cooperation roadmap “has already started, and it’s going great,” and that he would seek to have it extended before President Donald Trump leaves office.
Describing the future of defense cooperation as “very bright,” Breslow also expects more visits by American warships to the island’s ports: “I think you’re going to see more destroyers and ships come to port just like this one.”

NATO: ‘They have to decide’
Asked about the Greek Cypriot administration joining NATO, Breslow said the question “begins with the people of Cyprus. They have to decide.”
