TikTok, ByteDance and their affiliates have reached a $400 million settlement in a case concerning compliance with regulations protecting children’s online privacy. The U.S. Justice Department said the agreement is intended to resolve the case.
The case focuses on compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and regulations implementing the law.
The Justice Department said the settlement represents one of the largest amounts ever obtained in a case under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. TikTok will pay $300 million immediately and an additional $100 million after the previous settlement order against Musical.ly is vacated.
The department also said that significant changes had been made to TikTok’s ownership, management, compliance functions and privacy practices since the complaint was filed in 2024.
