While negotiations between Spain and Turkey over a KAAN fighter jet partnership continue, members of the US House of Representatives have held talks in Madrid to market the F-35.
Nathaniel Moran, Jim Costa, Brendan Boyle and Craig Goldman, accompanied by US Ambassador to Spain Benjamin Leon, visited Spanish Trade Minister Carlos Cuerpo.
The US lawmakers insisted that Spain should purchase F-35 aircraft.
Spanish government officials, however, brought up a US Government Accountability Office (GAO) report indicating that only a quarter of US F-35s are operationally ready.
Additionally, concerns were raised during the meeting about insufficient sovereignty over the fighter jets. It was noted that this situation is not well received by the Spanish Air Force.
The visiting American lawmakers have financial ties to Lockheed Martin. The lawmakers, who came to Madrid for lobbying activities, are listed on Lockheed Martin's donor list.
