US-born NBA star Kyle Lowry has ended his professional basketball career. The Toronto Raptors announced on social media that the 40-year-old point guard retired by signing a one-day contract with the team.
Lowry was a free agent and chose to end his career with the Raptors, where he played for nine years and won a championship in 2019. The US player, selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2006 NBA Draft, began his career there before being traded to the Houston Rockets.
Playing for the Toronto Raptors from 2012 to 2021, Lowry reached the peak of his career there. In 2019, Lowry advanced to the finals with his team and defeated the Golden State Warriors, winning his first NBA championship and bringing Toronto its first league title in history.
After Toronto, Lowry also played for the Miami Heat (2021-2024) and the Philadelphia 76ers (2024-2026), and was selected as an NBA All-Star five times during his career. The veteran player, who also won a gold medal with the US national team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, made the decision to retire from basketball.
