Utah Governor Spencer Cox declares statewide fireworks ban for July 4 celebrations
Governor Cox signed an emergency declaration citing historic and extreme wildfire conditions, effective July 2-5. Local governments may designate safe zones in coordination with fire chiefs.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has imposed a temporary fireworks restriction across the state ahead of the upcoming July 4 Independence Day holiday. Republican Governor Cox signed an emergency declaration citing the state's "historic" and "extreme" wildfire conditions.
The declaration temporarily suspends state law to authorize the state forester to ban fireworks within municipal boundaries between July 2 and July 5.
"No part of this decision was easy," Governor Cox said in a statement on social media. Noting that Utah residents typically enjoy celebrating with fireworks, Cox added, "But this year is different. We are seeing fire behavior that even our most experienced firefighters say they have never witnessed before."
Flexibility for local governments
While the ban somewhat dampens the holiday excitement, it offers a potential compromise for those wishing to celebrate. Under the declaration, local municipal leaders are authorized to designate specific "safe zones" where fireworks use will be permitted, in coordination with fire chiefs. If local leaders do not designate such zones, the state forester's closure order remains fully in effect.
Governor Cox emphasized in his statement that the goal is to ensure neighborhoods and communities are still standing on July 5.
Fire season at critical level
Utah has already seen 354 wildfires this season, charring approximately 142,000 acres. More than 75 percent of these fires have been recorded as human-caused. Utah State Forester Jamie Barnes warned that prolonged drought, critically dry vegetation and extreme weather conditions are causing fires to spread faster and behave in ways that defy historical expectations.
To deter preventable fires, the Utah Department of Public Safety has increased patrols in high-risk areas, while authorities warned that causing an illegal wildfire carries significant criminal and legal consequences. State officials will reassess the fire danger after the Independence Day weekend and decide whether similar restrictions will be necessary for the Pioneer Day holiday on July 22-25.
